Face-to-face conversations are the best way to support your kids’ learning. Put down the screen and find your Talk Spot.
While parents may be aware of the risks associated with excessive screen time for kids, 85 percent of Canadian children under 5 spend more time on devices than suggested guidelines. For young children, excessive interaction with phones or tablets is linked to significant language delays and even lifelong learning difficulties.
Talk Spot seeks to combat this by encouraging face-to-face interactions throughout May, Speech and Hearing Month.
A Talk Spot is anywhere people can communicate face-to-face with someone they love. This could be in the car, at the dinner table, in the community centre, at the mall, in the park: anywhere that facilitates discussion unhindered by the distraction of a screen.
Resources—including informational brochures, conversation starters and supporting materials—will be available throughout BC and your community in more than 70 libraries, dozens of community centres and shopping malls, Vancouver Coastal Health locations and select schools. In recognition of the importance of early childhood development, The City of Vancouver has announced Monday, May 21 as the inaugural Talk Spot Day.
Speech and Hearing BC members will also be available at select locations across the province, providing parents and caregivers the opportunity to learn more about how to positively influence their child’s cognitive development. Visit any of the locations below to talk to our licensed health professionals.
